Finance

Since qualifying as a chartered accountant with Arthur Andersen and Co, I have spent most of my career working as a finance director in the classical music business.

Until I moved to France in 2005, I was Director of Finance and Projects at Askonas Holt Ltd in London.  Askonas Holt is one of the world's leading arts management agencies, with 54 staff and a turnover of £7 million.  The company manages the careers of over 200 international conductors, instrumentalists and opera singers, and organises tours for a large number of outstanding orchestras and chamber ensembles.   As finance director, I was responsible for all aspects of the company's finances and business management.  In the additional role of projects director, I was responsible for the touring business, accounting for over half of the company's turnover.

Before that, I was Finance Director at the South Bank Centre in London for five years.  With the Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Room, SBC is at the heart of Britain's musical life, and also includes one of the country's most important contemporary art spaces in the Hayward Gallery.  I joined SBC at an exciting time, as part of the new management team taking over from the Greater London Council, with wholesale changes in policies, staffing, systems, and operations.

I spent five years with Arthur Andersen & Co, initially with their auditing practice and then, after qualifying as an accountant, with their management consultancy practice.  I worked principally with clients in the oil and construction industries, but also with a chain of toy shops, an advertising agency, and even a consulting assignment with the Inland Revenue.

Now back in the UK, my most recent assignment has been a consultancy project during summer 2010 for the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, reviewing their corporate sponsorship business.
