LOWRI BLAKE

Cello and guitar

 venescastres

Cellist Lowri Blake and guitarist Peter Martin present a programme of attractive and varied music for this mellow combination.  Favourite cello showpieces by Mendelssohn, Falla, Fauré, and of course Saint-Saëns’ The Swan, still the ultimate gliding cello melody.   Jazzy classics by Gershwin and Astor Piazzolla, the Argentinian tango king.  Peter switches to the theorbo, a spectacular bass lute nearly two metres long, to accompany baroque cello sonatas by Geminiani and Barrière, and shows off the instrument in solo works by seventeenth-century Italian composers.  Lowri switches to voice for luscious songs with guitar by Jobim and Lorca.  And no performance would be complete without Albert W. Ketèlbey’s The Phantom Melody, proud winner of the “Tit-Bits” prize in the 1920s.  It’s a delightful and unusual blend of music, designed for enjoyment.

Pictured: concerts given in summer 2007 in Vénès and in Castres., with a Spanish theme.  Lowri and Peter played their own new arrangements of piano favourites by Granados (Danza Española) and Albeniz (Granada, Sevilla, Asturias), plus Boccherini with baroque guitar, Piazzolla, Lorca and Falla.  The Castres concert, given in a historic open-air setting in the town centre, attracted an audience of some five hundred people.
